What is a Preamp Pedal?
A preamp pedal is an amps clean or dirty channel in one convenient package. The Apex Preamp is a direct replacement to your favorite distortion pedal, an entirely new channel added to your clean amp, or a dirty channel replacement on your high gain amp. Check out our use case guides to see all the different ways you can add the Apex Preamp to your rig!
Can it do cleans?
With the right guitar and settings it can get pretty clean, it will behave dynamically with your guitar like an amp.
How do you justify the price?
To get all the features of the Apex in any other form you would have to buy:
  • $250 boutique, all new high gain distortion pedal
  • $150 custom, ultra powerful noise gate
  • $180 Cabinet simulator
  • $100 one off pedal similar with a tight switch
Instead of spending $680 on 4 pedals you can spend less than half and get an Apex Preamp in one convenient pedal!
I already have a high gain amp, can I use this?
Yes! Blend the Apex Preamp with your existing dirty channel to get an all new distortion flavor!
Just make sure to turn off the cab sim by sweeping the knob all the way to the left.
How does it pair with a power amp?
Perfectly! You can use your power amp to run the Apex direct into your physical cabinet.
Just make sure to turn off the cab sim by sweeping the knob all the way to the left.
Can this replace my distortion pedal?
Yes! Use the Apex for a whole new distorted tone.

Will this work with my Axe FX II/Kemper/Line 6 device?
Yep! We made sure the pedal was voiced to cut through both high gain heads and integrate perfectly with digital modeling rigs.
Can I load my own cabinet IR?
The Apex’s cabinet simulator is analog and built-in, meaning you can’t change the impulse response. However, you can easily disable the cab sim by turning the knob to the left and use the Apex with your favorite 3rd party IR’s.
What is the Cab sim modelled after?
The Apex’s analog cabinet simulator is modelled after a modern 4x12 loaded with V30 speakers.
Does it Djent?
You already know the answer.
What are the power requirements of the Apex?
9V operation requires 29 mA and 18V requires 50 mA. We recommend running the unit at 9V. It will function at 18V but sounds best at 9V. All power supplies need to be DC power for your pedal to function properly, using an AC supply with most likely fry the circuit board and void your warranty.
Can I use a battery?
Yes! A standard 9v works, in addition to a proper power supply (9v negative tip only).

Precision Drive:

When will my Precision Drive ship?
If you order right now, your pedal will ship either same day or the next business day.
If you preordered a pedal, then it has already shipped and should arrive shortly!
Will you ship internationally?
We ship almost everywhere worldwide, except to Zimbabwe.
How much is shipping to my country?

How should I setup my pedal?
We suggest starting with the drive all the way down and the output at about ¾. Turn bright to the right until it cuts properly with your setup, and then adjust the variable attack knob to taste. Keep the gate towards the bottom of its range to just cut noise, and crank it to get a super tight sound. We did make sure the knobs don’t have any “dead spots” though, so experiment with everything (including the drive knob!) to find what works best for you.

I have questions. Who do I talk to?

Email us at help@horizondevices.com. We usually respond to all emails within 6 – 12 hours. Even on weekends.

Does it djent?

If you want it to.

Will my 7/8 string sound good with the Precision Drive?

The Precision Drive is voiced to work with lowering tunings better than any other pedal. Not only does it work great for standard 6 strings, but it’ll handle that multiscale 14 string you’ve been waiting to use for years just fine.

Can I use a battery?

Yes! A standard 9v works, in addition to a proper power supply (9v negative tip only).

How does it have a noise gate built in? Isn’t that really expensive?

Overdrives can be the noisiest part of your chain, and are essential for the tight sound on many modern metal recordings. We didn’t want to compromise on what the community wanted, so we made sure you could get that entire sound from one pedal. If you don’t want extra tightness, turn it to the left side of its range and it will only eliminate noise.

Will this work with my Axe FX II/Kemper/Line 6 device?

Yep! We made sure the pedal was voiced to cut through both high gain heads and integrate perfectly with digital modeling rigs.

Does it work like a normal OD?

Yes and no. It does boost your signal, but it is built from the ground up to tighten high gain tones. It won’t be confusing to dial in but will work easier than what you’re used to. It also does vintage crunch and lead tones great as well!

You say it’s a community-driven pedal. How does that work?

We spent hundreds of hours asking modern guitarists what they need out of pedals. For example, we’ve poured through the data of countless polls from our Facebook group of over 4800 members.

String Drop:

What string set is right for me?
6 Strings
We recommend the Regular 6 set for tuning to standard, or up to a step down. They are usable in drop C as well if you are ok with a more slinky feel.

The Heavy 6 set will work well in standard if you prefer a tighter feel, and will perform well for tunings as low as C. If you are tuning lower or prefer more tension we recommend the Ultra Heavy 6 string set. The Ultra Heavy 6 set provides enough tension to play as low as B standard, drop B or drop C if you prefer a tighter than what our Heavy 6 offers.

7 Strings
The Regular 7 set is ideal for those tuning to B standard or A if you’re OK with a looser feel. Any lower and we recommend the Heavy 7 set. We do not recommend using it to tune below G.
What gauges are the strings?
Our strings do not correspond with the tension you would expect due to the way they are wound, which is part of the reason they sound so clear!

The Regular 6 set will feel roughly like a 9.2-47.08 set, the Heavy 6 like a 10.15- 50.04, and the 7 string sets are the same for the first 6 strings, with the 7th on the Regular 7 feeling like a 59.3, and the Heavy 7 feeling like a 62.2. Our Ultra Heavy 6 set will feel like a 13.4-62.2 set and features a wound 3rd string.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept most major credit cards.

Are there any hidden fees?

There are no hidden fees associated with String Drop or Wired Guitarist. It’s not how we operate. We would rather earn your long-term business than make a small amount of money charging you an imaginary fee for doing nothing.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Please checkout for shipping costs. Our international shipping is low because we pay for a significant portion of it for you.

I have questions, how do I get answers?

Simply email us at help@horizondevices.com

When will my package arrive?

US customers can expect packages to arrive within 7 days, although they are usually there within 3 – 5 days. International packages vary from country to country but are usually there within 13 days. However, it is not uncommon for shipping time to take up to 5 weeks.

Are your strings good for standard tuning too?
Yes, they offer enhanced clarity and the progressive tension layout means a far superior feel as well.

Will these work with floating tremolos?

Yes. Our strings work with all bridges other than those that use double ball ends.

Is there any special setup required?

Nope! Simply put them on and stretch them as you would any other guitar strings.

Will these djent?

Yes.
